Course Description

This course equips decision makers with scientific basis and practical applications for decision and judgment. The course introduces participants to decision modeling and enhances organizational decision making abilities with better utilization of data and the propagation of evidence-based practices. It also tackles data collection and sorting for decision making with a special emphasis on the creation of spreadsheet models as a tool to optimize practice in frequently recurring decisions.

Methodology

The course relies heavily on hands-on exercises and case studies. Participants are provided with various examples and applications for the techniques and models learnt during the experience. The course also follows a practical approach to developing participants’ skills by utilizing different Excel-based exercises that develop their understanding of the models, as well as their Excel proficiency. Facilitators walk participants through the examples and support them during exercises to ensure the skills learnt are easily transferred to their day-to-day work.

Course Objectives

  • Discover common decision traps and tools to combat them.

  • Develop some intuition about intuition and use data to model and understand it.

  • Use the Decision Quality Framework to judge the quality of a decision at the time they make it.

  • Identify key risk factors based on the results of a sensitivity analysis.

  • Create basic prescriptive models to define specific courses of actions given a number of decision objectives and constraints.

  • Identify specific ways in which decision-aids can be useful to improve decision making and help those around you.

  • Differentiate between strategic decisions and other decisions and identify the tools to tackle them.

  • Appreciate the reality of decision making in organizations and possess the tactics to influence the decision outcomes.
